Red State Screening and Q&A with Kevin Smith

Last night at the Paramount Theatre, it was my pleasure to view Kevin Smith's newest film, Red State, and listen as he answered questions and spoke for almost 2 hours after the credits rolled. This film is his next to last film before he starts a new stage in his career.

Described by Smith to be, "A Tarantino movie by way of the Coen brothers," Red State was all that and more. Very unsettling, but not your typical Horror fare, I really enjoyed this film. The use of satire plus the brilliant performances of John Goodman, Michael Parks and many others, puts Kevin Smith in a whole new league of film directors in my opinion.

The Singer Gallery, located in the Mizel Arts and Culture Center, is featuring a new exhibit of images from LIFE Magazine, "the first all photographic news magazine" launched by TIME founder Henry Luce.

Over 60 images by popular photojournalists are represented including Margaret Bourke-White and John Loengard.   They captured life in America and abroad, giving beauty and sadness diverse faces to those at home.  If you can't make it to the  exhibit or want to learn more about the people behind the cameras, take a look at these titles available at the Library:

Kids & Teens - Vote for Your Favorite Books!

Kids Reading

Hey Kids and Teens - let your voice be heard by voting for your favorite books and authors from 2010 in the Children's Choice Book Awards. Children's Book Week is coming up in May, and as part of the celebration, they give out awards to popular authors. The Denver Public Library owns all of the titles that have been nominated, so get reading now while you still have time to vote!

Children's Book Week is May 2-8 and celebrates books for young people of all ages. While the Children's Book Week website has all kinds of good stuff on it, like a bookmark by Jeff Kinney (!), my favorite part is voting for the best books. The Children's Choice Book Awards honor books for Kindergarten - High School. If you haven't read some of these yet, you can pick up copies of all of the nominees from the various branches of the Denver Public Library. If your branch doesn't have one you want to read, just place a hold.
