The Phantom of Crossroads Theatre: Singer Marta Burton brings a little illumination to Five Points

Cover art for a 1920 edition of Phantom of the Opera

Crossroads Theatre hosts Marta Burton and Nick Rossi in Dark Duets- The Phantom of the Opera.

The first time I saw The Phantom of the Opera, I was entranced with everything about the production -- from the costumes to the staging. But it was the music, so dark and dreamy, that lingered long after the curtain fell. Fresh City Life has got a special treat for your Halloween goodie bag: a special FREE concert with Denver's premier chanteuse Marta Burton performing with her 'phantom,' Nick Rossi at Denver's beautiful Crossroads Theatre.

Great New Books for Kids

From The Kneebone Boy, Feiwel & Friends, 2010

Every month, librarians from Denver Public Library branches get together to talk about new books for school-aged kids. Here are some exciting new titles for fall.

Books for younger readers:

In a Tizzy over Dizzy

Today marks the anniversary of John Birks "Dizzy" Gillespie's birth. Born on this date in 1917, Dizzy and his contemporaries revolutionized modern jazz and influenced generations of musicians to come. Mr. Gillespie died in 1993, but his music remains legendary.

Zombies!

Zombie films are not only horrific and often humorous, but also offer an interesting critique on the occasionally mindless nature of humanity. If you see zombies downtown this weekend, it might just be the Zombie Crawl!

Happy Birthday Ursula Le Guin!

Ursula K. Le Guin

Ursula K. Le Guin was born on this date in 1929. Le Guin continues to revolutionize the Science Fiction and Fantasy genres and has won Nebula, Hugo and National Book Awards, among others. Her Earthsea series is one of my all-time favorites.

Happy Birthday John Krasinski!

My favorite slacker from The Office celebrates another birthday today! Born on this date in 1979, John Krasinski has been in a number of films. He recently made his directorial debut with Brief Interviews with Hideous Men.

Krasinski's film credits include:

Colorado Author Series: Margaret Coel

New York Times bestselling author Margaret Coel will discuss the latest novel in the Wind River mystery series, The Spider's Web, on Saturday, October 23 at 2 p.m. at the Ross-University Hills Branch Library. Desserts and beverages provided by Panera Bread.

Set among the Arapahos, The Spider's Web features Arapaho attorney Vicky Holden and Jesuit priest Father John O'Malley. Fellow author Tony Hillerman has called Coel "a master," and critics say her novels are "chock full of intrigue and imagination," and are "engaging blends of history, mystery, sexual tension and present-day life on the reservation." The books in the Wind River series do not have to be read in order.

Bootstrap Financing - Fall's Must-Have Accessory: Fashion designer Melissa May meets Marcel Proust

Design by Melissa May

Fresh City Life asked Denver designer Melissa May to answer the Proust questionnaire -- and she tells us like she sees it.

In the weeks leading up to our fashion spectacle Frock Out, each of our twelve designers will be featured here with their responses to the infamous Proust Questionnaire. Marcel Proust (1871-1922), French novelist, critic and essayist, believed that people must know and understand themselves before they can know or understand others.

The Book of Kells

The Secret of Kells was recently nominated for the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature. The Book of Kells, circa 800, inspired the intricate knots, designs and motifs that carried audiences away with delight and wonder. From creating your own Celtic designs to delving into the history of The Book of Kells, the library has it.
