The Denver Public Library Commission met
for their regular monthly meeting on Thursday, May 18, 2006.
Location: Bear Valley Branch Library
Members Present: Fofi Mendez, Kevin O’Connor (present for items 7 through 10), Karen Rokala, Lois Ann Rovira, Edward Schenck, K.C. Veio, Sid Wilson.
Members Absent: Julie Rodriguez.
Staff Present at Public Session: Diane Apperson, Robert Bowles, Jennifer Cotton, Gwendolyn Crenshaw, Elizabeth Elder, Eleanor Glover, Letty Icolari, Cori Jackamore, Celeste Jackson, Elaine Langeberg, Diane Lapierre, Rachelle Naishtut, Jo Sarling, Tom Scott, Sherry Spitsnaugle.

Hanne Lichtenfels, Denver Public Library Friends Foundation; Steve Hildmann, community member.
- Call to Order.
President K.C. Veio called the meeting to order at 3:35 p.m.
- Approval of Minutes. All minutes were approved as written.
- The Minutes of the Regular Monthly Meeting of March 16, 2006.
- The Minutes of the Special Meeting of May 4, 2006.
- Public Comment Period.
The staff and guests present introduced themselves. Steve Hildmann, community member, expressed his concern/interest in Library matters.
- Report of the President and Members.
- K.C. Veio reported that Shirley Amore accepted the position of City Librarian. She will begin employment with the Denver Public Library on June 19.
- Lois Ann Rovira reported that the Rare and Not-So-Rare Book and Art Auction held on April 28 had about 150 attendees with an estimated net income of $10,756.
- There was no report on Staff Council.
- Report of the Denver Public Library Friends Foundation.
Hanne Lichtenfels reported as follows:
- The exhibit in the display case in Schlessman Hall at the Central Library until the end of May is a historical perspective of the Friends Foundation.
- The first ‘Friends Award’ was presented to Marilyn Amer on May 16 in the Gates Reading Room on Level 5 of the Central Library. It was a very well-attended event. Ms. Amer specified that her $2,500 award be used for preservation in the Western History/Genealogy Department.
- Monthly Financial Report through April 30, 2006.
Robert Bowles presented this report. Expenditures are on track for the first four months of the year.
- Media Update.
Celeste Jackson presented a report on current and upcoming media opportunities. A video clip from the television show Colorado & Company was aired. The clip featured Fresh City Life program coordinator Kristy Martin discussing a program about Colfax Avenue being presented by Jim Havey.
- Report of the City Librarian and Staff.
Letty Icolari expanded on the written report.
- Other Business.
K.C. Veio asked Diane Lapierre to have the special committees for the 2006 Booklover’s Ball, in particular the Corporate Committee, begin meeting.
- K.C. Veio adjourned the meeting at 4:20 p.m.
