Guests Present: Mary Smith, Denver Public Library Friends Foundation; Steve Hildmann, Ann Meredyth, and Kay Pride, community members.
- Call to Order.
- Vice President Sid Wilson called the meeting to order at 3:45 p.m. He announced that although there was not a quorum present, three Commission members not in attendance had sent in their votes on issues before the meeting. (See individual agenda items.)
- Approval of Minutes of September 21, 2006, Regular Monthly Meeting.
- The Minutes were approved as written by the members present and absent.
- Public Comment Period.
- Cynthia Holdeman announced the death of long-time well-known customer Norman Knight.
- Report of the President and Members.
- Fofi Mendez reported on the activities of the Cultural Facilities Subcommittee of Denver’s Infrastructure Priorities Task Force.
- Report of the Denver Public Library Friends Foundation.
- Mary Smith reported on efforts of the Friends Foundation to redefine their role in regard to a relationship with the Library. The DPLFF Board of Trustees adopted the following Mission Statement on 10/13/06:
“The mission of the Denver Public Library Friends Foundation is to assist and support the Denver Public Library in the accomplishment of its goals and objectives, and to enhance the services of the Library that are funded by the City’s budget through advocacy, activities and programs, fund raising, and the management of private monies raised by or donated to the Library or to the Friends Foundation.”
- Financial Matters.
- Robert Bowles presented this report.
- Approval of Denver Public Library Proposal to Cultural Facilities Subcommittee of Denver’s Infrastructure Priorities Task Force.
- Elizabeth Elder presented a synopsis of the Library’s proposal and announced that the November 6 meeting will be held at the Decker Branch Library, 1501 South Logan Street, at 2 p.m. Upon motion by Sid Wilson, seconded by Lois Ann Rovira, the proposal was approved by all Commission members, both present and absent.
- Report of the City Librarian and Staff.
- In addition to her written report Shirley Amore reported as follows:
- One Book One Denver 2006 rolled out on October 18 with an announcement by Mayor Hickenlooper that the book is The Milagro Beanfield War by John Nichols.
- Derek Wolfgram is leaving the Denver Public Library to become the Director of the Butte County, California library system. Kudos for his great contributions to DPL.
- El Pomar Foundation requires a statement in all grant proposals that the governing board of the applying organization approves of submitting the proposal. Sid Wilson then moved that, “The Denver Public Library Commission on Thursday, October 19, 2006, approves that a grant request be made to the El Pomar Foundation in the amount of $50,000 to process manuscripts in the Library’s collection. The funds would be used to process and catalog manuscripts in the Library’s Western History and Genealogy ranching collection and to digitize and place online images from the collection. If funded, the project would begin in June 2007 and continue for one year.
The project would be under the direction of Jim Kroll, manager of the Western History and Genealogy department at the Denver Public Library.” Lois Ann Rovira seconded the motion and the proposal was approved by all Commission members, both present and absent.
- Diane Lapierre:
- Diane Lapierre reported on the current direct mail campaign and announced that she will report on the results of the Booklovers’ Ball at the November Commission meeting.
- Sid Wilson adjourned the meeting at 4:30 p.m.
