February 2014: The Rodolfo "Corky" Gonzales Branch Library is currently under construction and will serve as the main anchor and marquee project for the West Colfax corridor. Structural slab was poured in February and steel erection will begin soon thereafter. Interior construction will begin mid-March and continue through September. The branch is tentatively slated to open spring 2015.

About the Branch

The Rodolfo “Corky” Gonzales Branch Library is a new, 27,000 square-foot library at West Colfax Avenue and Irving Street. The facility will provide much-needed services to the West Denver neighborhoods, which have lacked a nearby branch library.

Community input helped determine the library’s location, character and components. The state-of-the-art two-story building presents a welcoming approach from all directions and an interior, which facilitates interaction and learning. The main level features a lobby, children’s area, and a Community Learning Plaza. The second level houses technology space with 50 computer stations, an adult reading alcove, teen spaces, study rooms and a meeting room for 20 people. These amenities are centered around an outdoor reading room on the second floor.

The branch will offer the latest in library technology, including customer self-checkout stations, eBooks, public computers, Wi-Fi and an automated materials handling system.

The branch has been designed to achieve LEED Silver certification by incorporating energy efficient and environmentally sustainable features in the design of the facility, its operations and the overall construction process.

The Rodolfo "Corky" Gonzales Branch Library is part of the infrastructure package approved by voters in November 2007, (Ballot Issues B thru I) which also included funding for parks, streets, public safety, cultural institutions and other important infrastructure needs. In all, over 200 projects are part of the $550 million bond package. See the complete list of other scheduled City bond projects.
