Checkouts and Renewals
Renewals, Loan Periods and Item Limits
As a reminder, a due date receipt is given at checkout. Check My Library Card to see when your materials are due, check your holds or renew your items.
You may renew your items in person at the Library, or by one of the following methods:
Online
You may renew your items online:
- At any Denver Public Library location from one of our computers
- From home 24 hours a day with My Library Card
By Phone
You may renew your items by calling 720-865-1133 (requires a touch-tone phone). Renewal by telephone is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Please have your library card number ready.
An item may not renew because:
- The item is on hold for another borrower
- The item is a featured title, magazine or ILL item
- The item has already been renewed the maximum number of times
- It is a Prospector item that is not eligible for renewal
- It is a Prospector item that has already been renewed once
- The item is overdue by 40 days or more
It is very important to verify that your renewals have been completed successfully by noting the new due dates.
You may have up to 300 items on your card. Please see the following for specific item limits, checkout periods and renewal limits.
Books, Audio Books (Tape/CD), CD-ROMs
- Checkout period: 3 weeks
- 3 renewals unless requested by another borrower
- No renewals on Featured Titles
- No limit up to the 300 total item limit
Video Tapes
- Checkout period: 1 week
- 1 renewal unless requested by another borrower
- Limit of 20 per library card account
DVDs
- Checkout period: 1 week for most DVDs. TV series and adult nonfiction DVDs have longer checkout periods. See below.
- 1 renewal unless requested by another borrower
- Limit of 7 DVDs per library card account
TV Series and Adult Nonfiction DVDs
The following DVDs have a 3-week checkout period and 3 renewals unless requested by another borrower:
- TV Series
- Adult nonfiction titles
CDs
- Checkout period: 1 week
- 1 renewal unless requested by another borrower
- Limit of 7 CDs per library card account
Magazines
- Checkout period: 1 week
- No renewals
- No limit up to the 300 total item limit
- Not all magazines circulate
Non-Circulating Items
- Reference Materials
- Western History and Genealogy Items
- Some Magazines

Downloadable eBooks and audio eBooks
- Checkout period: 21 days (3 weeks)
- No renewals but you may check out the same title again
- Automatically returned at the end of the checkout period
- Limit of 20 per library card account
- View your eBook account in the eBooks catalog
Prospector Items
The owning library determines the length of the loan:
- Checkout period: 3 weeks, 1 renewal
- Checkout period: 1 week, no renewals
or - For in library use only, no renewals
Your due date will be listed on the printed receipt you receive at the time of checkout. Prospector items that are eligible for a renewal can be renewed by phone, online or in person with the circulation department of any Denver Public Library location. Lost Prospector items are subject to a replacement cost of up to $400 plus a processing fee and overdue fines.
Interlibrary Loan (ILL) Items
The due date is set upon receipt of the item at the Denver Public Library. Some libraries allow a renewal. If you would like to renew an Interlibrary Loan item or have questions, call the Interlibrary Loan department at 720-865-1718. Please note: Interlibrary Loan items that are stamped "NOT RENEWABLE" cannot be renewed but may be re-ordered. Lost Interlibrary Loan items are subject to a replacement cost of up to $250 plus a processing fee and overdue fines. More information about Interlibrary Loan.
Featured titles are a selection of new and popular titles that are available for you! These titles cannot be renewed or placed on hold, insuring that these high-demand titles are available quickly. Just look for the “Featured Title” sticker on the spine or ask a staff member!
- Featured Title books check out for a full 3 weeks, but are not renewable.
- Featured Titles are not holdable.

Returns
Return materials to any Denver Public Library location. Book drops are available at all locations.
Audio/Video Policy
Please keep the following in mind when checking out and returning CDs, DVDs, Videos, CD ROMs and Audio Books:
- The Denver Public Library is not responsible for any damage caused to your playback equipment by these materials.
- Please make sure all pieces of the item are included before you check out or return an item.
- Incomplete items may not be accepted for return.
If an item is returned missing one or more pieces, we will try to contact you. If the problem hasn't been resolved within 15 days of the return of the item, you will be charged for the missing piece(s) or, in some cases, the entire item. No fee adjustments or refunds will be offered for materials returned after this 15-day period.
