On This Day in History - June 15

James K. Polk, eleventh President of the United States died on this date in 1849 in Nashville, Tennessee. Polk is best known for an incredibly successful one-term presidency, after which he declined a second term.

Like all Presidents, James Knox Polk was a politician, a businessman, but above all, a human being prone to error like the rest of us. While he is credited with having a successful presidency, his actions during his presidency provoked the Mexican War and perhaps even the Civil War.

"Just Kids" is Patti Smith's memoir of her relationship with New York City, art, music, and most of all, Robert Mapplethorpe. It chronicles Smith and Mapplethorpe's adventures as young, unknown artists in New York City, up until Mapplethorpe's death.

Patti Smith is known as an accomplished musician and poet. In her new book Just Kids Smith reflects on life before she and her friend Robert Mapplethorpe established themselves as professional artists.

Backyard Chickens

Backyard chicken farming is all the rage.  Whether you are ready to fully embrace the urban homesteading movement or just want a few fresh eggs, it's not that hard to raise your own chickens.

Before you get started, you will want to be aware of Denver's zoning ordinances and fees for chickens.  If these don't sound too daunting, there are a few other things to consider and the Library has lots of books that can help you out.  Be sure to do your homework before you buy your chickens!

Check out coop design plans if you're interested in building your own coop.

Miniature Gardening

Blog image

Whether you call them miniature gardens, tabletop gardens, or fairy gardens these tiny, darling landscapes are beautiful and simple enough for anyone to create. Because they are basically container gardens, they are perfect for any space, any lighting and any conditions!

Many of our local gardening stores have miniature plants and even tiny accessories. When I was last at Rabbit Shadow Farm, they mentioned that they would be introducing their own line of fairy garden furniture this fall. Taking a class at the Denver Botanic Gardens offered by Rabbit Shadow Farms was what first got me started in fairy gardening.

Happy National Doughnut Day!

Blog image

National Doughnut Day falls on the first Friday in June every year and was created by The Salvation Army in honor of the Salvation Army “Doughnut Lassies” who made donuts for homesick soldiers during World War I. Legend has it that although donuts were first introduced by Dutch settlers, it was the popularity of the doughnuts made by the "Lassies" that really made doughnuts a hit in America.

Doughnuts are certainly a hit with me! My dream doughnut feast would include doughnuts from Voodoo Doughnut in Portland, Doughnut Plant in New York, and Walton Donuts right here in Denver. But who am I kidding? Any doughnut is a good doughnut! I'll definitely be heading out for my free doughnut from LaMar's or Krispy Kreme on National Doughnut Day.
