Participants will have an opportunity to engage in rich dialogue and better understand the journey from the devastation of death to the horizon of hope. The book is a memoir of love, loss, grief, and survival.

In the United States, Russian literature is largely known for the unwieldy philosophical novels of Dostoevsky and Tolstoy. But there is a vast diversity and richness in the Russian literary tradition, which has produced masterpieces of a variety of styles and genres, just waiting to be discovered by Western audiences. This course introduces readers to works of writers largely unknown in the West, as well as lesser-known works of the authors that shaped Russia's international literary reputation.
Shaul Gabbay was born and raised in Tel Aviv. The son of Jewish Arab refugees, he was educated in Israel, received his Ph.D. from Columbia University, and completed his postdoctoral studies at the University of Chicago. Born in Haifa, Amin Kazak became a Palestinian refugee in 1948. Kazak completed advanced degrees from the American University in Beirut, Lebanon, and earned a Ph.D. from the University of Denver.
