History and Genealogy

Kermit Shields, retired geologist and Dinosaur Ridge volunteer, will share the Denver area's rich history of dinosaur discovery. Dinosaur fossils are still being discovered here in the 21st century! We will discuss historical discoveries from the Denver area and talk about where you can find out about Denver dinosaurs today.

Hear the story of the historic Fort Logan Field Officer's Quarters near Quincy and Lowell. The 3-story brick home, built in 1889 on Officer's Row, which still stands, is now a museum and has been designated a Denver Landmark. Fort Logan's story began in 1887 with the arrival of troops at the new "Camp Near the City of Denver." Over the years, thousands of soldiers and airmen enlisted, served, and were separated at Fort Logan until the post closed in 1946.

Riverside Cemetery, Denver’s oldest operating cemetery, is the final resting place of more veterans of the American Civil War than any other cemetery in Colorado. The people that changed the course of our country during the Civil War were the same ones that shaped Colorado and Denver. Experience history in this slide show presented by Fairmount Heritage Foundation volunteer Ray Thal.

Learn what Denver looked like millions of years ago, when dinosaurs roamed the earth! Hear about the fossils, footprints, and other discoveries you can make when visiting Dinosaur Ridge, just a short drive away in Morrison. Was there a dinosaur living in your back yard?

An interactive panel, led by Dr. Ella Maria Ray and Dr. Rachel Harding, that brings local scholars and poets together to dialogue with the audience about how Africans in the Americas have historically embraced vocal music as they moved towards and continue to advance in the direction of authentic liberation.
