The Denver Public Library is one of 150 libraries nationwide that will be hosting this new 5-part discussion series. It will use books and scholar led-discussion as an entry into serious thought, discussion, and further reading. It will also offer an occasion to bring diverse groups together at the library to examine the modern implications of the Civil War and emancipation. Discover this pivotal period of American history with your community. This series is a project of the National Endowment for the Humanities and the National Library Association.

Although we still do not have the answer after more than 130 years of research, we are making progress in finding older and older human sites. Steven Holen, Curator of Archaeology at the Denver Museum of Nature and Science will discuss the present state of our knowledge and suggest further avenues for research into this question.

Dr. Steve Nash, Curator of Anthropology at the Denver Museum of Nature and Science , will compare art, architecture, institutions, games, sacrifices, subsistence, in Pompeii and Tikal, Guatemala, which was occupied at the same time, with an eye towards commonalities and differences. This lecture will provide a sneak peek into A Day in Pompeii exhibition, opening at the Denver Museum of Nature and Science on September 14, 2012.

Hear the story of the historic Fort Logan Field Officer's Quarters near Quincy and Lowell. The 3-story brick home, built in 1889 on "officer's row," which still stands, is now a museum and has been designated a Denver Landmark. Fort Logan's story began in 1887 with the arrival of troops at the new "Camp Near the City of Denver." Over the years, thousands of soldiers and airmen enlisted, served, and were separated at Fort Logan until the military post closed in 1946.
