Whether you're a seasoned graphic novel reader or are new to the format, this list is a great place to find suggestions for what to read next. The nominees cover a wide range of categories, from continuing series to single issue, from publications aimed at kids, teens, and adults, to humor, reality-based, and anthologies. There are also specific awards for the all of the different artists who put their talents to work to make a graphic novel as a whole: writer, penciller/inker, painter, cover artist, lettering, and coloring.
Hey Kids and Teens - let your voice be heard by voting for your favorite books and authors from 2010 in the Children's Choice Book Awards. Children's Book Week is coming up in May, and as part of the celebration, they give out awards to popular authors. The Denver Public Library owns all of the titles that have been nominated, so get reading now while you still have time to vote!
Children's Book Week is May 2-8 and celebrates books for young people of all ages. While the Children's Book Week website has all kinds of good stuff on it, like a bookmark by Jeff Kinney (!), my favorite part is voting for the best books. The Children's Choice Book Awards honor books for Kindergarten - High School. If you haven't read some of these yet, you can pick up copies of all of the nominees from the various branches of the Denver Public Library. If your branch doesn't have one you want to read, just place a hold.
Beloved author Brian Jacques passed away earlier this week. The Redwall Abbey series, his most notable works, were originally written for the Royal Wavertree School for the Blind, his favorite stop while delivering milk. Even though he is no longer with us, the magical worlds he created will live forever.

The theme for Teen Read Week 2010 is Books with Beat. Why is it important to celebrate teens and reading October 17-23 (and the rest of the year)? For a lot of reasons!

The National Book Awards celebrate the best of American Literature published in the last year. The 2010 National Book Award Finalists were announced on October 13 by Pat Conroy at the Flannery O'Connor Childhood Home. The winners in each category will be announced on Wednesday, November 17.
Hey teen artists - it's time again for our Teen Read Week Sticker Contest!
Teen Read Week is October 17-23 this year and the theme is Books with Beat. One person will be chosen as our contest winner and will have their sticker distributed in all Denver Public Library locations during Teen Read Week! The winning art will also be featured on our teen website, eVolver.
Artwork needs to measure 3” x 3.”
It can be any kind of 2-D art: color, B/W, photo, digital, whatever!
Entries need to be turned in by Saturday, September 4, 2010 and the winner will be announced by the first week of October.
The Rita Awards are given by the Romance Writers of America for the best published novels and novellas that promote excellence in the romance genre. The award is named for the group's first president and has been given since 1983. The 2010 winners were recently announced!
