Film Series Dueling Divas: The Blonde Bombshell v. The Violet-Eyed Brunette - Gentlemen Prefer Blondes
Our last dueling divas series saw Bette Davis and Joan Crawford duking it out. Bette won, but it wasn’t a KO…both stars brought their best to the ring. Now for the dazzler in Denver – we’re pitting Marilyn Monroe against Elizabeth Taylor. Each night of this series, audience members will have a chance to vote for their favorite, and on the last night of the series, we’ll reveal the champion’s film, chosen by our audience. Come and back your fighter!
Directed by Howard Hawks. Starring Marilyn Monroe, Jane Russell. Marilyn Monroe is inextricably linked to the character she created for the film version of Gentlemen Prefer Blondes. Her portrayal of Lorelei Lee was a doubled edged sword – it crystallized her star in the firmament of Hollywood icons, but she was forever trapped by the confines of playing the dumb blonde. Here’s the real revelation about Monroe: the more we get to know her life and accomplishments as an actress, the more profound and nuanced her roles as the stupid girl become. She was no dummy; and she left a handful of great films for us to revel in her charms. 91 minutes.
