Mick Bolger, a native of Ireland, will discuss the Irish language. Irish is the official language of the Republic of Ireland despite being the first language of only a small minority of the population. For most of Irish history is was the primary language of that nation and is the source of a rich and deep literary and song tradition. This talk will address the nature of the language, its unusual grammar and syntax, Its place in Irish history and its effects on English as it is spoken in Ireland today. Mick has taught Irish Gaelic in both the United States and Ireland for many years. He also performs with Colcannon, a traditional Irish band.
