For anyone who has dreamt of making a film or launching any major creative endeavor, this film is both a cautionary tale and an inspirational seminar. Downtrodden filmmaker and paperboy Mark Borchardt is the subject of Chris Smith’s funny and touching documentary on the vagaries of the American Dream. 107 minutes. Rated R.

Tarnation

Tarnation

Saturday, March 8, 2 p.m., Central Library, Level B2 Conference Center

2003. Directed by Jonathan Caouette.
Famously made for the paltry sum of $218 and edited on Apple’s iMovie, Tarnation is “part documentary, part narrative fiction, part home movie, and part acid trip. A psychedelic whirlwind of snapshots, Super-8 home movies, old answering machine messages, video diaries, early short films, snippets of '80s pop culture, and dramatic reenactments to create an epic portrait of an American family travesty.” (Sujit Varma for imdb.com.) 88 minutes. Not rated.
