Augusta Tabor's Mercantile

Before he became Colorado's Silver King, Horace Tabor ran a Mom and Pop mercantile store in Leadville with his first wife Augusta. Actually Augusta ran the store while Horace schemed to make his fortune. When two down and out miners asked Horace to grubstake them (food and supplies in exchange for a percentage of whatever gold or silver was unearthed), to Augusta's loud protests, Tabor sent them off with enough food and whiskey to hold them for a week or so. During this time, these two miners discovered a huge vein of silver carbonate; this initial discovery was the foundation of the Tabor fortune.

Knit & Lit: Jim Lehrer's Eureka

Knit & Lit: Jim Lehrer's Eureka

Monday, May 5, 6:30 - 7:30 p.m.
Central Library, Level 1 Fresh City Lounge

Fans of our Knit & Lit club can rejoice: it's back with a choice new title! Read Jim Lehrer's (PBS News Hour) new novel, Eureka, grab some knitting or handwork and come book talk with us. About the book: "Earnest, honest Otis Halstead is plodding toward his sixtieth birthday when he impulsively spends $12,000 for a cast-iron toy fire truck he didn't get for Christmas at age five. In short order, he loads the toy fire truck onto his Cushman, dons his helmet, and heads west. He tells people he meets on the road his name is "Buck." For regular readers of newsman Lehrer's surprisingly extensive oeuvre, a new book is a welcome event; his seemingly artless but actually sly, winsome, and crafty stories always celebrate the ordinary, and give us characters whose essential decency stays with the reader long after the book begins to gather dust on the shelf. Eureka does all of those things. In fact, it may be Lehrer's best novel yet." Thomas Gaughan for Booklist.
