History

Hispanic Heritage Month begins on September 15. This time period was chosen to celebrate Hispanic heritage because several Latin American countries celebrate their independence day on September 15, including Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. On September 16, Mexico celebrates its independence and Chile's independence day is September 18. In 1998, the celebration was extended to a month to include Día de la Raza on October 12.
