I grew up in a former British colony and in the 80s we only had one television station so you had no choice but to watch whatever was on (unless of course you rented a movie or something). This show came on at night and was hugely popular. I recently started looking at it again and it has matured well. The Nazis are the main butt of the jokes but so are the French, the Italians and the English themselves. Every episode starts with the main character Rene giving a short summary of what has transpired before. There are running jokes such as the closeted gay Lieutenant Gruber, Rene's dalliances with the servant girls, his wife Edith's mother in law who is bedridden.  The main actors are all doing a fake French accent and some of them switch to the English accent from time to time.  All in all this is British comedy at its finest.
