Charlotte and Rosie are teenage orphans, daughters of the town's former Miller. Life at the Stilwater Mill is in their blood, so they decide to do anything possible to keep the mill running against the odds. Their employees and the other townspeople say that the mill is cursed and strange things definitely occur there - as if the mill has a mind of its own. When events seem determined to keep the mill from operating, a mysterious little man appears who can spin straw into gold. Can Charlotte afford not to make a deal to save her mill? Can she break the supposed curse? This familiar story has been re-worked in an engrossing way that fleshes out some strong female characters.
