Review

Having never read a Western novel before and only having John Wayne movies to influence my opinion of the genre, I was a bit skeptical as to whether or not I would like The Ferguson Rifle by Louis L’Amour.  The book is set shortly after the Lewis and Clark expedition that explored the newly bought Louisiana Purchase.  A man, Ronan Chantry, is running from a previous life and decides to head west.  On his way he runs into a band of rugged but noble men, and this sets the stage for the heroic story that unfolds.  I will say that all of the elements I expected from the genre were in this book: gold, Indians, rugged men seeking their fortune in the Western frontier, a villain bent on destroying the main character, and horses.  Overall, I would say that it is a good story told by the preeminent author of Westerns.  I would recommend this book to anyone looking for a quick read that is pure entertainment as there isn’t much in the way of intellectual stimulation.
