Review

This novel in verse explores gender identity through the eyes of various folks on all parts of the spectrum. Brendan never felt like a super masculine guy, but he hasn't always wanted to be a girl, either. Angel, who Brendan meets at a center for GLBT teens, befriends Brendan and introduces him to terms like trans and genderqueer, while demonstrating that, while transgender teens can have tough lives, there are also possibilities for happiness. Vanessa is Brendan's girlfriend, and as Brendan explores his identity and becomes more distant, she wonders where she fits in to his life. Each of the characters has a distinct voice, and the poems sharply illustrate the struggles of each. A good resource section at the end for any reader who wants to learn more about transgender and gender identity issues.
