Review

There are two reasons why I read this book: (1) a friend raves about the series (she's read each book several times); and (2) I'm a big "read the book before watching the movie/tv show" person. And I'd like to watch the A Game of Thrones TV series.

Just as I started reading the book (in the hot pool at the Glenwood Hot Springs), a woman swam over to me and exclaimed, "You're going to love that book! You won't be able to put it down!" She was correct: I read it in just over a week. I can't wait to start the next book in this four-part series.

The book is fantasy and set in a fictionalized land during a medieval time. There are many plot lines, characters and families, but, fortunately, there is a character list provided. Each chapter is mostly about one person, so you get a deeper understanding of the characters. There are battle scenes, but not pages upon pages of them (a plus for me). There are also several strong women characters. There is something for everyone: mystery, romance, adventure, and even sardonic humor.
