Before Green Gables tells the story of Anne Shirley's life right up until the point she arrives at the station for Matthew Cuthbert to pick her up. It tells the story of her parents' romance before she was born and how she was passed around as an orphan to take care of all those little children. It also shows the many people and situations that encouraged her imagination and love of learning to make her the observant, talkative, and accident-prone girl we come to love in later books. If you love the Anne books, don't be afraid to try the prequel - it's a sweet book and doesn't stray far from the story Anne told in the original.
