Review

The Hangman is a special release novella from bestselling author Louise Penny. It features Chief Inspector Gamache of the Quebec Surete and many of the other characters  from her beloved Inspector Gamache mystery series. This time a body has been found hanging in the woods outside the Quebec village of Three Pines. It looks like suicide, but is it? Inspector Gamache will find out for sure. As with many of her other books, The Hangman weaves some interesting aspects of Canadian history into key aspects of the plot.

This book is much shorter and simpler than her others. She wrote it to be featured by the GoodReads Canada program, which promotes adult literacy by publishing books by popular authors that are geared toward a lower reading level than their usual work. This is an adult book, with an adult story, but written at the third grade reading level. I was worried that its simplicity might not draw me in or catch my imagination as much as her others, but I needn’t have. While the story and language are simpler, it still read like a Louise Penny mystery, which in my book is high praise. The Hangman was just a lighter, faster one than her other books – perfect to tide me over until her newest book, How the Light Gets In, was released.
