Review

Shenk takes us on an engaging and hilarious tour of Chess's 1400-year history explaining the close relationship of the game to the development of an intellectual society. As the book develops, we see people tutored by the game, driven insane, and given secret codes through game play. Shenk avoids the intellectual snobbery outsiders usually get from chess geeks. Instead, he brings his love of the game to everyone.
