Review

An Invisible Thread is the true story of a New York City businesswoman and an 11-year-old panhandler. The title comes from the Chinese proverb, "An invisible thread connects those who are destined to meet, regardless of time, place, and circumstance. The thread may stretch or tangle. But it will never break."

In 1986, Laura Schroff was asked for spare change by a young boy. At first, she ignored him and walked by, but something made her turn around and take him to lunch at McDonald's. She asked Maurice to meet her again for lunch the next Monday. Over a series of lunches over the next months, Laura and Maurice became friends. Maurice's home life was horrible and Laura tried her best to be an adult in his life who didn't let him down. Their friendship has lasted for years.

Neither Laura nor Maurice is infallible. At first, this made me made angry as I read the book, but soon realized that a story with perfect people is unlikely. Read this book and gain a little more faith in the world.
