The Kingdom of Little Wounds—Horrifying historical fiction in an imaginary kingdom of the late 16th century where syphilis is rampant in the royal family and nobility. Told in alternating voices of two maids and the Queen, the horrifyingly arbitrary nature of madness is doubled by the addition of absolute power to the equation. Some of the images and scenes are beyond unpleasant. Inept physicians, calculating courtiers, beheadings, rape and myriad other indignities  move the plot forward. A squirmingly uncomfortable read, but somehow not a book you can put down until you have finished it.
