Review

This book is a dreamy post-apocalyptic story that follows the mythic moments of the Odyssey. It’s Francesca Lia Block at her best, with lovely and complex characters and intense storytelling. The story is strange and empowering and romantic in the best way. One particular detail about the book that I found especially appealing was its treatment of LGTBQ characters. So often that aspect of a story is made to take center stage, and the book becomes an “issue” book. I loved the way the characters’ sexual orientations were handled here. The characters weren’t in any way defined by their sexuality. It was just another part of them, and there was no extended angst about it. They are who they are. The end. And it’s beautiful. I’m looking forward to the next in the series, which will follow the Aeneid.
