Mara is a volleyball superstar in a near future world where sports heroes revered even more than they are now. Everyone knows her name, her stats, her face (and her sponsors). When she starts to show more than human abilities, everyone turns on her--is she cheating, deceiving the world? Pulled in many different directions--the government wants her powers, she wants to prove herself and to make sure her brother, serving in the military, is safe--Mara realizes she must make a statement, and maybe leave humanity forever. Though I wish there had been more of an explanation of where her powers came from, I enjoyed this exploration of identity and power, and would recommend Mara to anyone who wants a different twist on the superhero story.
