This is the fourth entry in the Mike Bowditch Game Warden series, which is a fascinating look at the Maine woods area that Mike patrols. In this episode, a series of increasingly violent events occurs when a wealthy woman buys up thousands of acres in the area and wants to turn it into a nature preserve. Many groups and individuals feel threatened by this, and mayhem ensues. Bowditch reminds me a bit of Barbara Havers, the detective sergeant in the long running Detective Lynley series by Elizabeth George. Both characters are compassionate and well-meaning, but lack the ability to follow orders and keep rebellious thoughts quiet that is so essential to a successful career in law enforcement. These traits are rather endearing, and also allow for complex character and plot development. Compelling and highly enjoyable.
