This is a giant book of essays that is worth its weight (and perhaps also its wait, as it will take even the most dedicated reader several weeks to get through).  The essays are arranged chronologically by topic, covering many of the conflicts, discoveries, inventions, achievements, and mistakes that have made the United States what it is today.  The variety of topic is wide enough, and the book is thick enough, that readers can skip essays without regret, yet learn something new about subjects that are often considered fundamental.
