This is the strangest, most untraditional Iggy Pop record. Préliminaires is reminiscent of early Serge Gainsbourg, as well as 1930s era Louis Armstrong. Pop seems to be paying tribute to more quiet and diverse musical styles than his usual punk rock, including swamp rock, jazz, and bossa nova. Highlights include "A Machine for Loving," a sentimental and eerie song about dogs and artwork by French-Iranian graphic novelist Marjane Satrapi of Persepolis fame.
