Review

This movie was made in 1970 and so some of the comedic material depicted  is a tad inappropriate. With that said, this is a good addition to the Sherlock cannon and describes a case that was supposedly not included in earlier archives. This mystery comes to them in the form of a beautiful Belgian who has escaped her captors and is now seeking her missing husband. The search takes them to Scotland where the mystery deepens.  Actor Robert Stephens gives a good performance in the title role and Colin Blakely is a sometimes hysterical Watson (unlike the steady, dependable Watson from the book and from the series starring Jeremy Brett).  The film tries to balance revealing more of Holmes' private life while simultaneously showing his skill as a detective and at times struggles to do both. Still, it is a captivating tale and does the character justice.
