Review

I stumbled upon this while searching for someone else and I was glad I did. Loosely based on some historical events, the book combines elements of science fiction, history and action. Two young slave boys escape from their plantation and wind up on Benjamin Franklin's property where something unfortunate occurs but somehow leaves the boys with strange powers that they need to learn to use. A shadowy figure sympathetic to the plight of slaves takes them under his wing and teaches them an ancient fighting style.  This whole first book was the back story (sort of like a prequel) and book two will take up the story. This book is a good piece of historical science fiction that would be a good read for older kids and teens. I could see how an intrepid teacher could use some of the events depicted here to pique students' interest in how things actually unfolded hundreds of years ago.
