A beautifully written exploration of identity and fitting in. Peter Huang was born in a small town in Canada to first generation immigrants from China. His father, delighted to have a boy after 2 girls, names him Juan Chaun, "powerful king." Peter grows up with his three sisters, knowing inside that he is also a girl, but having no idea how to express this immutable fact. We also see the identity struggles of Peter's father--he wants to assimilate into his new town so badly that he never utters a word of his native language, his children do not know his first name or where he was born. An affecting exploration of the power of secrets and how hard it can be to let go of a facade and live fully as yourself.
