This book is a twist on the classic fairy tale of Hansel and Gretel. Two Jewish children (Hansel and Gretel) are abandoned by their father and stepmother in Nazi occupied Poland. After wandering in the woods, they are taken in by a grandmotherly woman (the witch) who risks her life in harboring them. The fantastical elements of a classic fairy tale blend strangely well with the horrors of modern warfare. Highly recommended.
