On the Island, everything has a useful purpose, and everything is named to match. Dogs have become "herding creatures," the baker is named Baker, and imagination is outlawed as a waste of time. Medford Runyuin washed up on the Island as a baby and has never fit in. Secretly, Medford carves beautiful designs into his bowls and walking sticks and then has to hide them because art is forbidden. When a mysterious Goatman appears on the Island, his existence throws into question everything that the people believe. Medford's friendship with the Goatman puts his own life in danger. Can the Island people change their perspective or will Medford be banished from everything he has ever known?
