Chanrithy Him quotes the lines from a familiar song "Chivith choun reang, choun pleang, Life sometimes has drought and sometimes has rain." Her story of surviving Cambodian death camps is told with simple, sharp imagery and a heightened sense of the physical world around her from the earth where she is kneeling, waiting to be shot or the hope of freedom swelling fat like a bird's belly. The horror of the killing fields are not lost, however, and you will understand the incredible power of her emphatic statement, "We are alive."
