Tina Darling, Mommie's Home!

 Faye Dunaway's portrayal of Joan Crawford in Mommie Dearest has become a cult classic. Fresh City Life presents this weird, absurd biopic as our KnitFlix movie for October.

 It was meant to be a faithful film rendition of Christina Crawford's book of the same title, but Mommie Dearest quickly became a midnight showing cult film. In fact, during its initial release, it developed a following as loyal as The Rocky Horror Picture Show.

I'm not a film academic, so I can't know with any certainty why Mommie Dearest moved into the realm of cult classic. But some of the reasons I love it might be contributing factors. In no particular order:

USA Pro Cycling Challenge - Downtown street closures this weekend

USA Pro Cycling Challenge

Several streets around the Central Library will be closed on Saturday and Sunday for the exciting conclusion to the inaugural USA Pro Cycling Challenge. The final stage will take place on Sunday, August 28, 2011 with a free party in Downtown Denver's Civic Center Park. The seven-day, 500-mile race across Colorado will end with live national television coverage on NBC and an estimated Denver crowd of 50,000.

Riders are expected to cross the finish line at approximately 1:30 p.m. on Broadway directly in front of the Colorado State Capitol after completing six loops on a circuit that encompasses portions of Speer Boulevard and Colfax Avenue, continuing through Downtown Denver next to Civic Center Park and then across the finish line on Broadway. Free festivities for spectators, including concerts and bike demos, will begin at 10:00 a.m. on race day in the park. After the awards ceremony, the Flobots will perform a free concert for all spectators in Civic Center Park.

Parenting 2.0: Free Parenting Series

Raising Kids WHo Love to Read

A free parenting series begins September 8. Nannies, caregivers, grandparents and teachers are also welcome!

The Eugene Field Branch Library will be hosting a free parenting series on four consecutive Thursday evenings in September, 6:30-7:30 p.m. Experts in the fields of parent education, finance, health literacy development will present logical, common sense techniques to help you navigate the sometimes overwhelming job of caring for your child.

The classes are free, but each session is limited to 30 participants so registration is required by calling 720-865-0240. These classes are intended for adults only, so please arrange for child care.

It's never too early to look ahead and plan your upcoming week. Whether you need to fix up your resume, learn some computer skills, or try your hand at knitting, there is plenty for you to enjoy at these Fresh City Life My Branch events!

Do you think you know Colorado History? Well learn about the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly of Colorado history at this great program, presented by the Fairmount Heritage Foundation. Hear stories that didn’t make it into the history books about Speer, Iliff, Lowry, Elitch, and others. This event is happening at the Ross-University Hills Branch on Thursday, August 25 at 6 p.m.
