The 42nd annual MileHiCon blasts off this weekend, October 22, 23 and 24, and features over a hundred events including signings and panels, with Hugo-nominee Paolo Bacigalupi as toastmaster topping the bill. This event funds local literacy programs and includes art exhibitions, lectures, workshops, and fun stuff for the wee ones too!
Ursula K. Le Guin was born on this date in 1929. Le Guin continues to revolutionize the Science Fiction and Fantasy genres and has won Nebula, Hugo and National Book Awards, among others. Her Earthsea series is one of my all-time favorites.

The Book of Kells, circa 800, inspired the intricate knots, designs and motifs that carried audiences away with delight and wonder. Su Teatro, Denver's talented acting troupe providing the best of Chicano theater, recently purchased the Denver Civic Theater on Santa Fe Drive.
My friends and I were too young to understand the growing use of the term Chicano while elders preferred Mexican. When I was older, a writer summed up what Chicano meant for him - "the hyphen between Mexican and American." Chicano theater is another way of accessing the rich cultural traditions of Mexican Americans. If you haven't read any Chicano drama, take a look at the following titles:

The National Book Awards celebrate the best of American Literature published in the last year. The 2010 National Book Award Finalists were announced on October 13 by Pat Conroy at the Flannery O'Connor Childhood Home. The winners in each category will be announced on Wednesday, November 17.
The Man Booker Prize is awarded annually to the best book of the year by a British or Irish author selected by critics, writers and academics. The 2010 winner is The Finkler Question by Howard Jacobson. The award was announced Tuesday evening at a dinner at London's Guildhall and was broadcast by the BBC shortly after 10 p.m.
