I read a recent New York Times article, Gadgets You Should Get Rid Of (or Not), that lists the devices that we can do away with (or keep) now that technology has progressed to the point of redundancy. One of the suggestions broke my heart: cookbooks.
“BOOKS Keep them (with one exception)… there is one area where printed matter is going to give way to digital content: cookbooks. Martha Stewart Makes Cookies, a $5 app for the iPad, is the wave of the future. Every recipe has a photo of the dish (something far too expensive for many printed cookbooks).
I finally had a chance to whip up a batch of Creamy Gazpacho Andaluz from Cook's Illustrated. The farmer's market veggies were begging to get into this cold, creamy and zesty soup. Watch the video to see how easy this dish was to make.
Since moving into our new (old) house recently, we've missed our chance to start up a vegetable garden in our backyard. I'm really struggling through the end of summer without my fresh-off-the-vine tomatoes, last minute addition of chile peppers, and warm roasted beets. So lots of my recipes right now are including fresh farmer's market veggies as well as gifts from friends' gardens (Thanks friends!).

Right after I gave birth to my son, I found it difficult to complete an entire novel so I started checking out the library's magazines. Reading in short spurts; I could do that! And what a great variety. I especially appreciate the culinary magazines:
I. LOVE. THIS. COOKBOOK. Seriously people, is there a more fun-to-read, easy-on-your-busy-lifestyle, creative cookbook out there?
Fun to read because he's so entertaining and funny and he has a potty mouth that keeps it real.
Easy because I had left over macaroni to use for a pasta salad later in the week and although I do prefer to make things from scratch, using the dry pancake mix was a cinch. With all that maple-y, crunchy, cheesy goodness, I couldn't tell it was from a box.
