Avant-Garde Musician and Singer Helen Gillet Set To Perform at DPL

You should hear Helen Gillet work her magic as a singer and musician. (see video below) She's played for sold out audiences nationally and around the world. And she is touring this summer. 

Because we love Helen and we told her so, she is stopping at Denver Public Library for a free concert on Sunday, July 21. All for the love of libraries and making great music.

Fresh City Life is making beautiful music with Arts & Venues Denver this year. Our shared May event, a concert with the Castle Rock Community Ringers, continues a partnership of free and spectacular cultural programming.

Here's my street cred on this topic: I grew up attending a Presbyterian church and, in my experience, two things were always certain at church. First, during services, when the 'moment of fellowship' arrived and we were all supposed to turn to a relative stranger and greet them with a handshake or (gasp) hug, we instead would turn to one of our own family members and greet them -- with very restrained joy. And secondly, there was always a bell choir. Always. It's a tradition that I'm glad has continued on -- and I write that with joy unrestrained.

Nyckelharpa. It sounds prettier than it sounds.

Denver Public Library's Schlessman Hall hosts some of Colorado's most talented musicians in the Fresh City Life Weekend Music Series -- free! This Saturday, concert-goers will hear the strange and beautiful sounds of the nyckelharpa played by Sandra Wong.

The nyckelharpa might be the duck-billed platypus of the music world. Swedish in origin, it combines the strings of a violin, the shape of steel guitar or violin and keys used to change tones or pitch. A cousin of the hurdy gurdy, this odd instrument always delights audiences.

Austin Piazzolla Quintet Plays Denver Public Library

Our live music series continues with a spectacular concert featuring the Texas group APQ Tango (AKA The Austin Piazzolla Quintet). Monday, April 1 at Central Library.

They're one of the most popular tango groups in the region, and APQ will be playing a special, free concert for us this Monday night! As an added bonus, dancers from Parasol Arts will be on hand to add traditional tango dances to some of APQ's music selections. Hope you can join us for a memorable evening.

Created by Marta Burton, this free concert is a multi-media performance which draws upon the music, historical narratives and images of Jewish and African American experiences of oppression and slavery, to raise awareness of those enslaved globally today. Writer, composer and performer Nick Busheff knows a thing or two about showmanship; he's learned from the legends of pop and rock.

Part of the group Kinky Mink, that entertains packed houses with their rock anthems turned into lounge music, Nick Busheff has carved out his own niche in local music. And Kinky Mink is poised to take their act to the next level. Before we'll have to say, "we knew him when" -- Nick performs for Fresh City Life's Weekend Music Series.

To Erhu is human, to hear it -- divine

The erhu, a two-stringed instrument which is evocative of China, is being used in contemporary recordings of pop and underground dance music. 

For a one-thousand-year-old instrument, the erhu is holding up pretty well in modern times. It has been featured in contemporary film scores (House of Flying Daggers) and utilized by rock and pop musicians for it's unmistakable sound.
