We are learning to knit at the Montbello Library! During our Monday evening Plaza programming, our knitting circle takes over the storytime room with our yarn and needles. We are a diverse group of adults, teenagers, and a few children, and it’s a lot of fun getting to know each other.
We’re learning the basics of knitting, and one of our members has offered to teach us all to crochet, too. Some of our kids have even been sewing toys out of felt! We’ve been meeting for a couple of months now, and many of us have finished our very first knitting and sewing projects.
Add your own tapestry crochet potholder to our growing installation and become a part of this community event. Free materials are available for this project.
Fresh City Life hosted our makers' event this past Saturday -- an all day workshop that helped to grow our collection of tapestry crochet potholders. They have begun to take over a wall in the Fresh City Lounge and we'll just let it keep growing throughout the year as crocheters add to this fun art piece.

This blog about Fresh City Life's newest obsession, hyperbolic crochet, is genius and will likely be nominated for a Pulitzer Prize! Is this an example of hyperbole or overweening ego? Yes.
It seems fitting that a fibers technique so extravagant and exaggerated as this would carry the name hyperbolic crochet. The name is based not only on the over-the-top quality of these sculptures, but also the hyperbolic geometry that informs the shapes and designs of this craft.

It's been said that when one crochets (or knits) all your troubles dissolve. I'm here to say, it's true!
Crocheting is like meditating. One pretty knot leads into another, building a creation of your own for yourself or as a gift. Soon one row is complete and then another. Soon a few minutes have passed, then an hour. Each knot is like a breath, a dance of fingers that create a whimsical design, a skirt, a scarf, something made from structure into love. I've lost myself in blankets, hats, and sweaters and the end result was a better frame of mind.
Granny Squares are a crocheter's passport to 1970s boho-chic!
It turns out that making granny squares can be a little addictive. They're fast and fun to crochet -- so the squares start to pile up quickly. There are endless color and yarn weight combinations -- so they can be simple or complex, and can incorporate easy or challenging color combinations. And crocheting is very portable -- so it's easy to throw a project in a bag and head out the door.
