Heart and Soul: 2013 Weekend Music Series

Musician Jayme Stone

"Music expresses that which cannot be said and on which it is impossible to be silent." -- Victor Hugo

Fresh City Life has been bringing Denver musicians together with their fans and supporters for two seasons. This third annual FCL Weekend Music Series is poised to be the biggest and most diverse schedule of free concerts in the city.

We're adding new concerts to our line-up each week and, just between you and I, our full list of concerts for the year is nearly complete and we'll be releasing the full season's schedule in a matter of weeks. Follow the schedule and attend a concert or two for general good vibrations.

"Music is the movement of sound to reach the soul for the education of its virtue." -- Plato

She Was The First "It" Girl

"We had individuality. We did as we pleased. We stayed up late. We dressed the way we wanted. I used to whiz down Sunset Boulevard in my open Kissel, with several red chow dogs to match my hair. Today, they're sensible and end up with better health. But we had more fun." -- Clara Bow

She challenged even the relaxed mores of Hollywood. Born to a mentally ill mother who tainted much of her childhood, she came from poverty and abuse to remake herself into the eponymous IT girl; Clara Bow is the stuff of Hollywood legends.

See the original film this month at Denver Public Library, and you'll get "it."

Your Words Shape Your World

Molina Speaks photographed by Ric Urritia

Critically acclaimed Colorado poet and rapper, Molina Speaks, brings his spirited voice to Other Places, Other Voices -- a community workshop exploring spoken word poetry focusing on discrimination and human rights.

In collaboration with the Mizel Museum, Fresh City Life is hosting Denver's most audacious spoken word artist -- Molina Speaks. One of his recent projects is Bronze Future: Letters for 2045 -- a spoken word video chapbook – a digital diary to the future.  This work is the first of its kind.

Elton John Inspired Pianist Nick Busheff

Elton John

Writer, composer and performer Nick Busheff knows a thing or two about showmanship; he's learned from the legends of pop and rock.

Part of the group Kinky Mink, that entertains packed houses with their rock anthems turned into lounge music, Nick Busheff has carved out his own niche in local music. And Kinky Mink is poised to take their act to the next level. Before we'll have to say, "we knew him when" -- Nick performs for Fresh City Life's Weekend Music Series.

The Perfect Valentine's Day = Chocolate, Roses and Zombies

If all the hearts and flowers and sugary confections leave you feeling a bit underwhelmed, Fresh City Life offers an alternative: our Anti-Valentine’s Day Heartburn Party. And this year, for fun, we've added in zombies.

When we talked to our friends at Mile High Cinema and told them that we wanted to do something extra special for our Anti-Valentine's Day party this year, they didn't hesitate when they told us they had the perfect film for us: a new entry in the current love affair with zombies, Pontypool. Hope you can join us for this presentation of a newly-minted classic.

To Erhu is human, to hear it -- divine

Erhu

The erhu, a two-stringed instrument which is evocative of China, is being used in contemporary recordings of pop and underground dance music.

For a one-thousand-year-old instrument, the erhu is holding up pretty well in modern times. It has been featured in contemporary film scores (House of Flying Daggers) and utilized by rock and pop musicians for it's unmistakable sound.
