Banned Books Week was founded in 1982 by First Amendment and library activist Judith Krug, Executive Director of the Freedom to Read Foundation. Krug said that the Association of American Publishers contacted her with ideas to bring the increasing number of banned books to the attention of the American public. In conjunction with the American Library Association's Intellectual Freedom Committee, and six weeks later the first Banned Books Week was celebrated!
This year, Banned Books Week is Sept. 22-28, and we encourage readers everywhere to read a banned or censored book, and create community conversation around it. Whether you are looking for a title for your kid, teen, or yourself, DPL has some lists to browse for find your freedom to read!
